Road transports face increasing societal challenges with respect to emissions, safety, traffic congestion, as well as business challenges related to tightened delivery times and cost constraints. Truck automation, e.g. self-driving trucks, may be utilized to address some of these issues.

A drawback is that self-driving trucks significantly increase technical complexity and thus introduce new challenges in the product development phase. Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is today identified to be a key component to cope with the increasing complexity, particularly in products containing an increased amount of electronics and software. Hence, an MBSE approach is a process related way to master complexity, potentially resulting in reduced development time and cost, etc.

We are now looking for a PhD candidate within Model-Based Systems Engineering. The research will be performed at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and at Scania in Södertälje.

Objectives

The overall aim of the research project is to identify and investigate key process related challenges and to develop a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach in order to improve these areas, mainly for the specific needs at Scania.

As an industrial PhD student, you are an employee at Scania, where you will be part of a team with industry experts and other researchers. Your time and location will be split between Scania, Södertälje and KTH, Stockholm. After obtaining your PhD degree, you will be offered a job within R&D at Scania.

Your Profile

You have a Master of Science degree in Engineering, with theoretical knowledge of Mechatronics , System and Component Design , Product Development and preferably Systems Engineering . You are structured, creative, highly motivated to perform research and have a "systems thinking mindset". Moreover, you are expected to have excellent writing and communication skills in English.

Time schedule

The target is to start Q3 2019 and reach a PhD degree within 5 years.
