Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions. In order to decrease the emissions of carbon dioxide from vehicle transports it is necessary to increase the share of renewable fuels in diesel. An increase of these so called drop-in fuels can however lead to solvency problems and the formation of soft particles. These soft particles can create deposits in the fuel injection equipment and cause drivability problems. To be able to study and understand the mechanism behind internal injector deposits is thus vital for the increasing the share of renewable fuels.

In order to study the mechanism, we need a measurement method. Today we have injector test rigs to perform endurance and performance tests, but they are not developed to test for internal injector deposits from soft particles. Your task will thus be to propose how to adapt the test rigs, manage the modifications, run the adapted test rig with soft particles, understand the test rig weaknesses and finally propose a testing procedure. Since no one at Scania has built anything like this before it is good to be innovative, flexible, have an interest in experimental work and like challenges. This is a multidisciplinary task which means that you will have to interact with several specialist and experts from different areas. Good cooperation skills are thus needed.

The diploma work will be done in cooperation with fuel system design, fuel system testing, material technology at Scania CV and Cummins-Scania Fuel System JV. The diploma work is a pre-study aiming for a larger project together with Internal Combustion Engines at KTH.

Literature study on the mechanism behind internal injector deposits in academia and industry in general, and the experience of internal injector deposits Cummins and Scania specifically.
  • Adapt an injector test rig so that it can study internal injector deposits
  • Design and perform experiments in the test rig
  • Evaluate the experiments and propose further improvements of the rig
  • Propose a test protocol for evaluating the effect of soft particles
  • Written report and oral presentation.

Suitable education could be Master of Science in, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Engineering, Chemistry or Technical Physics.
