Background
As both legal and costumer requirements on emissions and fuel consumption for the internal combustion engine are becoming increasingly stringent, high demand is put on the engine control system. Almost all control strategies rely on accurate modelling of the many, often complex, processes taking place in the engine. As requirements tightens, the accuracy of these models needs to be increased and handle a large range of operating conditions and different engine hardware configurations.

Target/scope
One of the most important parameters for engine controls is the air mass flow that is induced into the cylinders. An accurate model of the air mass flow is required by many other control strategies and models used by e.g. the gas exchange-, turbocharger-, combustion-, injection- and aftertreatment system. The purpose of the thesis project is to investigate and further develop models for air mass flow estimation which can handle an engine with a variable valve timing system.

Description of the assignment
  • Compilation of previous models and work
  • Implementation of chosen models in GT-Power/Matlab/Simulink/Python
  • Evaluation of models on engine test data (full and single-cylinder engines)
  • Analysis and improvements of models suitable for e.g. offline analysis, calibration and engine controls
  • Implementation and evaluation of chosen model in an engine control system
  • Continuous documentation
  • Presentation of the work

Master within control systems and/or internal combustion engines.
