Our Exciting Opportunity

As the need for more efficient communication systems push the boundaries of radio technology as we know it, theories and methods that can maintain wireless connectivity with increased number of simultaneous users, higher bandwidth and lower latency will become of higher importance. Moreover, it is paramount for those models to work as intend while meeting other conditions such as coverage, signal strength, interference (intra-cell and inter-cell) and other effects that are attributed to physical objects and structures, which inherently impacts radio propagation. Can we detect conditions (through simulations) such as line of sight, multi path effects, time of flight and opportunities for communication even with a complex radio environment, which would include many devices that are beamforming and competing for virtually the same spectrum?
Modelling, presentation and to some extent visualization of complex scenarios are possible using state of the art frameworks such as MATLAB, which will be the main framework of the thesis work. It is envisioned that even more advanced and future scenarios may be possible to study and develop using the same tools (in addition to tools uniquely developed within Ericsson) and possibly bring it to the next level by augmenting, which is to make insights over a known subset of the environment visible as in reality and AR or modelled in VR.
At Ericsson we are investigating how to improve our channel estimation models, signal processing techniques as well as tools that are able to simulate and present insights based on the newly proposed channel models in various scenarios (Indoor not the least using next generation radio operating in the so-called millimeter wave spectrum).

You will

• Perform research on how to develop improved channel models and signal processing techniques for several environments, prominently indoor environments
• Implement the newly proposed models using existing simulation tools, primarily MATLAB
• Present the results in different formats, not the least as graphical representations such 2D heatmaps (AKA: RF raytracing)
• Investigate other interesting ways to visualize the results, ultimately using modern graphical immersive XR environments
• Report to the Head of Device Software Research

The scope of the thesis includes, but is not limited to:

• Developing a thesis plan and identify research questions related to improving the understanding and perception of challenges in the area of radio path propagation
• Becoming acquainted with Ericsson's internal simulation framework and applications that are primarily used in radio and channel modelling research, and understanding how it effects radio propagation within a set limit/environment
• Becoming familiar with search tools on radio modelling research and related knowledge such as IEEE, open-source software and libraries, MATLAB models and toolboxes, etc.
• Surveying the literature and prior art related to radio propagation simulations and representative methods for visualization diagrams; 2D heat maps, 3D heat maps, etc.
• Proposing new channel modelling and signal processing techniques that accommodates an identified set of environments
• Experimentation: developing, new or existing, simulation frameworks to test the newly proposed channel models and signal processing techniques, mainly using MATLAB
• Building MATLAB libraries that can be used as a proof of concept or a demo
• Becoming acquainted with the use of XR tools (AR and/or VR) for description and modelling of 3D environments such as Unity/UE, and possibly WebXR tools for presenting insights gained from radio wave propagation simulations

To be successful in the role you must have

• Fluency in English
• Hands-on experience with programming and simulator applications, especially MATLAB
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Self-motivation, creativity with great analytical skills
• Excellent understanding of wireless communication systems and concepts, primarily physical layer (channel modelling, radio propagation, signal processing, etc.)

Optional Qualifications

• Understanding of User Experience, Quality of Experience, Experiment Design
• Understanding of XR, especially Augmented Reality

We are looking for students pursuing a master's degree in the area of Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar.
