Do you want to be one of the Interns in our Ericsson Garage?

Interested in working part time, during your studies, as an Intern at the Ericsson Garage, our Innovation Incubator?

Internship Responsibilities & Tasks

Main tasks for our interns will be to participate in Garage projects and make ideas come to life. As an intern you will spend 1-2 days a week at the Ericsson Garage in Linköping where you will be part of a small team consisting of other interns, Ericsson Innovators and external partners. We gather up and drive smaller Proof of Concept activities, build mock ups and demo objects that might move further into product development.

Our Garage is an arena where we foster innovation, explore and collaborate with external parties such as Academia and other external companies. Garage projects are early phase concept projects. Information & Communication Technology (ICT) for sustainability and security are important aspects considered as well.

Examples of areas for ongoing Garage projects:

  • Internet of Things (IoT) for e.g. Positioning, Smart City and Security
  • Connected Drone
  • Investigate new 5G Use cases
  • Explore Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning opportunities

Project Description

Many commercial use cases benefits from precise positions. One solution is to use a capable Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receiver provided with GNSS corrections that enable accuracies of a few centimeters in 3D. Recently, cellular standardization in 3GPP has completed an open and interoperable specification for such corrections, and Ericsson has developed a server side for distribution of such corrections and also a client side implementation in a garage project. It has been successfully tested on two different hardware, Raspberry Pi and Beaglebone with a cellular modem, and a u-Blox GNSS receiver. It is implemented in C and runs on Ubuntu. The units have been used with cars, drones and boats to date.

The GNSS client now becomes a separate project, which will focus on adaptions to specific use case needs. One task is to enable interaction with Ericsson Control Tower - a dashboard and coordination cloud application that, among other things, obtains precise positions from devices via Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT). Furthermore, the GNSS client also will enable interaction with the cellular modem to retrieve the ID and signal strength of the serving cell, to report that to the control tower. One use case is 3D radio signal strength logging using drones. Another task is to enable discussions with device vendors typical for some outdoor use cases.

Position Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with following the skills and mindset:
  • Students with that "Maker-Space Gene"
  • Interested in early demo and proof of concept development
  • Keen on IoT and connect everything that might benefit from being connected
  • Development and hacking experience playing with hardware (Arduino or Raspberry Pie etc.)
  • Learn and build mock ups and MVPs (Minimal Viable Products)
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. students (min. year 2) in University programs D, IT, Y, I, U, Media Tech
