Our Exciting Opportunity

At Ericsson, we are investigating how to perform joint object detection (OD) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) in a way that such processes benefit from each other. Especially when posing information and point cloud/map data can help increase the accuracy or robustness of object detection.
We are looking for a master thesis student who can help us carry out research on how to improve object detection by using pose/localization and map information as delivered by visual-inertial SLAM algorithms. For example, by understanding the impact on bounding-box and class accuracy of OD models run on devices moving dynamically on an environment with available pose and map data from SLAM algorithms. Also, to implement python / OpenCV together with a robot operating system (ROS) wrapper and/or ROS library that allows to study and evaluate this impact.

You will

• Develop a thesis plan and identify research questions related to improving Object detection accuracy and robustness using spatial map information
• Carry out a literature survey on prior works related to joint SLAM and object detection
• Become acquainted with ROS and SLAM framework
• Become acquainted with object detection or segmentation frameworks
• Develop a study and experimental setup
• Develop Python/OpenCV scripts and ROS wrapper/libraries for a proof of concept

• Report to the Head of Device Software Research

To be successful in the role you must have

• Master student status in the area of Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar
• Proficiency in English
• Excellent analytical skills
• Hands-on programming experience
• Experience with computer vision
• Ability to work independently
• Understanding of networking concepts
• Understanding of User Experience, Quality of Experience, Experiment Design
• Understanding of XR, especially Augmented Reality
