Description of the unit

This project will be hosted by Ericsson Research in Kista. The hosting group in Ericsson Research is specialized in fronthaul and indoor radio solutions, 5G and beyond radio system architecture and protocols.

Thesis description

In centralized radio access network (C-RAN) architecture, the baseband unit (BBU) is connected to the radio unit (RU) via a fronthaul interface. When moving to higher frequency range in 5G, wider bandwidth and higher number of antennas and thereby massive MIMO techniques are taken advantages of, largely boosting capacity of the 5G system. Those great benefits also introduce new challenges to the fronthaul interface since the required fronthaul capacity is driven up quickly. As the fronthaul link relies on wireline deployment which comprises an important portion of TCO, designing fronthaul interface with good scalability towards future RAN evolution is of a great merit.

This master thesis project will focus on beamforming algorithms and the related components such as channel estimation, reference signals, etc., conducted or processed at either BBU or RU which have impact to (or are constrained by) the fronthaul interface. In this study, the implementation and evaluation will be done on an in-house link-level simulation platform. Impact of different techniques on the fronthaul interfaces will also be evaluated, considering fronthaul constraints at the network side.

You will be required to:
  • Study relevant 3GPP and O-RAN specifications and understand some essential PHY layer components between base-station and user equipment;
  • Implement and integrate functions and algorithms in the in-house link-level simulator;
  • Evaluate impacts of fronthaul interface on the air interface performance;
  • Document the results as a thesis, preferably using LaTeX.


We are looking for a student studying masters in Telecommunication, Wireless communication, Information and Communication Technology, Engineering Physics or equivalent.

We are looking for a student with good experience using MATLAB and solid knowledge in telecommunication. Good understanding of 5G PHY layer and MIMO techniques is a merit. Very good oral and written proficiency in English is a must.
