As the tech firm that created the mobile world, and with more than 54,000 patents to our name, we've made it our business to make a mark. When joining our team at Ericsson you are empowered to learn, lead and perform at your best, shaping the future of technology. This is a place where you're welcomed as your own perfectly unique self, and celebrated for the skills, talent, and perspective you bring to the team. Are you in?

Come, and be where it begins.

Our Exciting Opportunity

With 5G being deployed across the world, new use cases are emerging in many new domains, e.g. autonomous vehicles, smart cities, virtual reality and many more. These applications typically require either high bandwidth and/or extremely low latency. To mitigate this, data centers at the logical edge of a mobile network (also called Edge Cloud) could provide computing facilities to these applications, avoiding higher network latency as well as lowering pressure on the network bandwidth capacity. However, deploying data centers at the edge of the mobile network implies costs, both for the deployment investment as well as for its operation and maintenance. Indeed, if we run an application at the edge, can we calculate how much resources will cost? How much would the difference be as compared to running the same application in a traditional large-scale central data center? How could we innovate the design for Edge Cloud to further bring down its resource cost?

Ericsson research

Ericsson Research provides the Ericsson group with exploratory and disruptive research, advanced system concepts, novel technology, and new methodologies. World-class innovation is achieved through cooperation within Ericsson, together with partners, customers, universities, and research institutes. Ericsson Research incorporates hundreds of enthusiastic contributors all over the world and is organized by specialty, with topics including such rapidly evolving areas as radio, networking, cloud, security, AI, and many others.

You will

  • Investigate these questions by shaping and steering novel concepts, solutions, and models in the context of potential edge cloud infrastructure and the design of Edge Cloud. With these innovations you may also influence the Cloud evolution towards natively supporting the requirements of the mobile network.
  • Investigate edge cloud infrastructure placement problem.
  • Perform literature reviews on the techno-economic models for edge clouds.
  • Investigate and propose new design considerations for edge clouds, implement them in models.
  • Evaluate the cost of resources via simulations and identify tradeoffs to achieve higher cost efficiency.
  • Build, share and transfer competence in Edge Cloud techno-economics together with a team of inspiring researchers. Typically, our work is performed in projects that may incorporate internal and external research collaborations across international borders and sectors.
  • Have the opportunity to develop and present your results in prototypes and concept demonstrations, where we put emphasis on the quality and re-usability of the developed software components.
  • Create patents that protect your innovative solutions.
  • Have the chance to disseminate and publish your research results, where you will have the challenging task of simplifying the complex, and clearly communicating advanced concepts.
  • Report to a Research Leader

To be successful in the role you must have

  • PhD or Master's degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Mathematics, or other related fields
  • Strong background or hands-on experience in distributed systems
  • Software development experience in one or more industry standard programming languages, preferably Python and C++
  • Knowledge of programming environment in Linux
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Thirst for knowledge and the ability to practically apply it
  • Creativity and a sense of teamwork alongside the ability to work independently when required
  • Good communication skills in written and spoken English

You might also have:
  • Experience in system modeling, queueing theory, and optimization
  • Experience with discrete event simulation
  • Knowledge of statistics and/or economics
  • Experience in developing patents
  • Experience in contributing to research communities, including conference papers and other research publications
  • An established personal network within academia and/or industry
