Why is Ericsson a good place to work?

Ericsson enables communications service providers to capture the full value of connectivity. The company's portfolio spans Networks, Digital Services, Managed Services, and Emerging Business and is designed to help our customers go digital, increase efficiency, find new revenue streams, and create new user experiences. Ericsson's investments in innovation have delivered the benefits of telephony and mobile broadband to billions of people around the world ensuring our solutions - and our customers - are at the forefront of innovation. We support networks that connect more than 2.5 billion subscribers. With over 100,000 employees and customers in 180 countries, we combine global scale with technology and service leadership. 40 percent of the world's mobile traffic is carried over an Ericsson network. And, our Technology for Good and Connect to Learn programs include creating technology that makes it easier to save lives, feed societies, bring technology to emerging markets and connectivity to remote areas, and grow businesses and prosperity.

At Ericsson, we give our employees the freedom to think big and navigate their career, on a global scale. We create technology that helps others, from helping people enjoy their favourite content to helping people recover from natural disasters by enabling better communications between rescue workers. Your ideas and innovations can turn into achievements that impact society and change the world, creating new connections, new possibilities, and new capabilities. We find that Ericsson is at its best when we bring together the diverse skills of our people. Working across business areas, across cultures, across geographical borders, across technical disciplines. More often than not, across ground-breaking solutions. Next generation technology can be staggeringly complex. But the simpler it is to use; the more people benefit from it. Join us and help build technology that makes it simple to connect with information, business, societies, and each other.

Our Exciting Opportunity

The research on how to improve our mobile communication systems from 5th generation to 6th generation is ongoing all over the world. Ericsson Research is one of the leading players, and we look into several different interesting areas. One of them is to use the mobile communication systems to sense our surroundings. Today sensing and event detection are often carried out by cameras and radars/lidars. In particular, event detection and classification using image processing is very advanced and there are numerous software libraries that can analyze images from webcams to detect and classify all sorts of events.

In this thesis we will investigate indoor event detection and classification using RF waves. Examples of event detection include presence and proximity detection.

The goal of the thesis is to develop a lab setup to enable fully automated training of a classifier of RF waves, based on input from cameras. The cameras, together with image processing software, will be used to detect, classify and label events. The labeled data from the camera will be pre-processed and merged with RF wave measurements gathered by radios, and supervised machine learning algorithms shall be used to train an event classifier that operates on features extracted from the radio measurements.

You will

  • Work with a mix of laboratory, theoretical and analysis work.
  • Install a system compromising of cameras and radio transreceivers which are connected to a server
  • Configure the system, trigger imaging and radio measurements and gather and merge data from cameras and radios in the server
  • Select features to extract from RF measurements and choose suitable machine learning algorithms to implement in the server
  • Run the system and train the classifier, evaluate accuracy and study impact of different parameters.

To be successful in the role you must have

  • Experience and good knowledge in programming
  • Be on your last year of Master studies within the fields of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar.
  • An interest in compiling/configure software, debugging, AI, machine learning, algorithms and for new technology
