Would you like to write a Master Thesis linked to groundbreaking microwave transport products and be part of driving our technology leadership?

We are now looking for one or two Master Thesis workers to join our Microwave & Digital Design team in Gothenburg. In this position you will have a meaningful role in one of our autonomous hardware development teams which have the full hardware design responsibility for several of Ericsson's MINI-LINK products. This includes both modems, processing & switch units as well as all outdoor products. We apply lean and agile ways of working, hence continuous improvement, innovation and competence sharing are valued parts of the daily work. Based on thesis scope you will continuously encounter new challenges and get the opportunity to drive activities such as requirement analysis, design simulation, integration and verification. Master Thesis Project Description

The advent of 5G and the growth of high data rate services such as video streaming places new requirements on bandwidth over a wireless channel, hence wireless communication is using higher order modulation schemes at higher frequencies than ever before. These schemes increase data rates but require strict margins to operate according to set performance requirements. Today phase noise is one of the major bottlenecks for higher order modulation schemes at higher frequencies as well as interacting products such as XPIC (Cross Polarization Interference Cancellation) and MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems. This further means that low phase noise becomes a crucial part of the design in the pursuit of reaching higher data rates.

When a mechanically tunable 10 GHz cavity resonator is combined with an amplifier, a cavity oscillator with extreme low phase noise characteristics can be crafted. To further improve performance and application functionality a phase locking solution needs to be implemented. The latter can be achieved by developing a control board that can adjust the resonator and amplifier by comparing output frequency to a known frequency reference (known as a phase locked loop).

As a Master Thesis worker, you will:

  • Select suitable phase detector solution
  • Investigate phase shifter requirements for low phase noise oscillation
  • Design proof-of-concept test PCB that phase locks a tunable cavity oscillator:
  • Using a high-resolution linear motor with a closed loop control system to supervise the tunable resonator
  • Using a voltage-controlled phase shifter to regulate the oscillation criterion
  • Using a microcontroller to control the entire oscillator
  • Craft the oscillator bias control network
  • Verify of the complete phase locked oscillator solution, hence confirm minimum achievable phase noise and frequency tunability by using spectrum and network analyzers
  • Results are to be summarized in a Master Thesis report

Key Qualifications:

A successful candidate is driven, has very good networking, collaboration and interpersonal skills in English, both in written and oral form, a talent for innovation, and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, covering:
  • Studying Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar. All master program courses are preferably finished before start of thesis work
  • Curiosity about electronics hardware design (digital and/or analog) is seen as essential
  • Eager to learn, curious, solution oriented as well as true standout colleague
  • Result oriented, having an innovative mentality and valuing high quality results
  • Based on the scope, this thesis is recommended to be carried out by one or two students
  • Work should be done in close cooperation with Ericsson AB and follow applicable company standards
