Our Exciting Opportunity

Would you like to write a Master Thesis linked to groundbreaking microwave transport products and be part of driving our technology leadership?

We are now looking for one or two Master Thesis workers to join our Microwave & Digital Design team in Gothenburg. In this position you will have a meaningful role in one of our autonomous hardware development teams which have the full hardware design responsibility for several of Ericsson's MINI-LINK products. This includes both modems, processing & switch units as well as all outdoor products. We apply lean and agile ways of working, hence continuous improvement, innovation and competence sharing are valued parts of the daily work. Based on thesis scope you will continuously encounter new challenges and get the opportunity to drive activities such as requirement analysis, design simulation, integration and verification. We offer a stimulating work environment, vast competence development opportunities and possibilities to gain both professional as well as personal growth. This also includes insight in the great opportunities that Ericsson can offer.

Master Thesis Project Description

Ericsson manufactures a variety of wireless communication products which need to be certified for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) before being released to the market. This ensures that the products are compliant to standards for Radiated Emission and Immunity. To prevent EMC issues, shielding metal chassis are typically used, which also serve mechanical and thermal functions. It is desirable to be able to predict the Shielding Effectiveness (SE) of the chassis before manufacturing, hence introduce preventive measure to reduce field leakage from gaps, screws, and connectors in the chassis. By using suitable measurement method e.g. using a reverberation chamber or TEM cell, it could be possible to craft a simulation model setup that accurately predicts shielding effectiveness. The location of the source or receiver of the interference mounted on the circuit board inside the chassis may also impact the SE, as different field modes are excited

As a Master Thesis worker, you will:

  • Perform a literature study and concept evaluation of using a reverberation chamber or TEM cell to generate simulation models for chassis design
  • Design, simulate and evaluate excitation structure (antenna) inside the chassis for SE measurements
  • Identify critical design elements to increasing SE
  • Evaluate if a stochastic analysis of mechanical gap tolerances is useful to predict SE
  • Summarize results in a Master Thesis report

Key Qualifications:

A successful candidate is driven, has very good networking, collaboration and interpersonal skills in English, both in written and oral form, a talent for innovation, and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, covering:
  • Studying Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar. All master program courses are preferably finished before start of thesis work
  • Curiosity about electronics hardware design (digital and/or analog) is seen as essential
  • Experience in using electromagnetic simulation tools (such as HFSS, CST)
  • Knowledge of antenna design, reverberation chambers, and EM simulation methods is seen as a merit
  • Eager to learn, curious, solution oriented as well as true standout colleague
  • Result oriented, having an innovative mentality and valuing high quality results
  • Based on the scope, this thesis is recommended to be carried out by one or two students
  • Work should be done in close cooperation with Ericsson AB and follow applicable company standards

Expected Takeaways:

The candidate(s) will gain knowledge regarding hardware design requirements for microwave radio links. A deep knowledge within the area of EM simulation, antennas and EMC will be obtained as well as an introduction to working in an agile multicultural environment.

Apply today and take the opportunity to join our team and become a key player in contributing to Ericsson's future microwave transport products!
