Background

Industrial automation and distributed AI are important pillars of 6G. Industrial automation, including factory automation, is considered the main driver for time-sensitive networks (TSN). One of the main requirements for industrial automation is high reliability (e.g., 10 years without application fail down), availability (e.g., 99.9999%), and low latency (below some tens of milliseconds). We call such extreme quality of service as ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC). Enabling URLLC may require a huge slice of network resources. However, there are growing interests for distributed AI, mainly due to its privacy and security promises. Distributed AI services, especially in the training phase, often require running communication-heavy algorithms, which can be a bottleneck for serving URLLC traffic. Despite the importance of these two services, we do not know their mutual impacts. Such knowledge would help better design the network slicing to efficiently run two services without over-utilizing network resources. This thesis aims at understanding this fundamental interplay. Such knowledge is essential to develop an efficient distributed AI over mobile networks, which can be integrated into network orchestrator and network slicing mechanisms.

Purpose

The aim of this thesis is to use our network simulator to analyze the interplay between URLLC traffic and distributed training service for multiple networking settings and exploit the insights to develop URLLC-friendly distributed training algorithms.

You will

  • Study our network simulator
  • Investigate KPIs to evaluate performance of URLLC and distributed training services;
  • Run an example scenario of factory network running both services and produce data out of the simulator;
  • Measure the performance degradation of URLLC in the presence of distributed AI services. Here we consider various AI settings which includes: 1) model size, 2) distributed training algorithm and 3) number of nodes and background traffic;
  • Develop an algorithm that optimizes system configuration including AI and network configs; and
  • Report to the Research Manager.


To be successful in the role you must have

  • Basics of ML
  • Wireless networks or equivalent (optional).
  • Good background in Python (background in Java is a plus)
  • Course requirements must have been fulfilled for the degree project
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Ability to perform studies and reports
  • Ability to do innovation
  • The candidate should be self-driven and able to initiate action
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaborating in teams
  • Good presentation and communication skills
