Our Exciting Opportunity

Ericsson is developing a digital financial platform that is already improving the lives of millions of daily users in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. By helping us to also enable offline payments, where funds can be transferred from a payer to a payee without network connectivity, you will help to increase financial freedom to many people around the world in places where telecommunications, or even electricity, are a scarcity. Enabling offline payments will also increase the robustness of the platform all over the world, as temporary disruptions can occur anywhere.

The problem we would like to investigate as part of the thesis is how to perform an offline payment in a secure manner, so that the electronic cash can't be forged or double spent.

This master thesis is divided into several steps with the end goal of showing a prototype of how offline payments can be performed in a secure manner, or at least significantly limiting the risk, in an account based financial platform.

We are looking for 1 or 2 students for this project that will start in January. The main office for the project will be in Karlskrona, most parts of the project can be done remotely.

You will

  • Study existing literature and research regarding offline electronic payments. Example questions: How to optionally preserve anonymity of the Payer in an offline payment? How to avoid forgery of electronic cash? How to prevent, or at least detect, double spending of electronic cash? Can electronic cash be further transferable to other Payees before it is deposited in a secure and high-performing manner? Can electronic cash be divisible (i.e. not only pre-defined specific denominations such as 1, 2, 5, 10, … when something costs 2.99) in a secure and high-performing manner?
  • Discuss implementation options
  • Implement a proof of concept


The thesis will be concluded with a result presentation for the Ericsson Mobile Financial Services team.

To be successful in the role you must

  • Be a MSc-student in Computer science, Software Engineering, Telecommunication Systems, or similar
  • Programming experience in Java
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with team members
  • Good English skills, both written and spoken
  • An interest in financial services, digital currencies, or cryptocurrencies is preferred
  • Experience within cryptography is preferred
