Our Exciting Opportunity

Software Tech Realization unit is working with hardware and software integration of next generation radio access network (RAN) technology prototypes. We work closely with Standards and Technology programs within Development Unit Networks, and with Ericsson Research. In our unit you will gain insights to new technologies, engage in an innovative culture, and be exposed to a wide range of exciting engineering challenges!

Sustainability is a focus area for Ericsson, where radio access networks evolution is driving towards ever more energy efficient communication to save power and reduce carbon footprint. In such networks it is plausible that simple connected devices be able to harvest enough energy from its environment to sustain wireless communication without the need for a battery!

We plan to build a working solution to demonstrate such capabilities and study the feasibility in terms of data rate, communication protocols, sensor technology, coverage, and operating conditions. This demonstrator will harvest vibration energy and use a small sensor platform wireless device.

The master thesis will focus on developing a complete energy neutral system with three main components; a vibration energy harvester, a battery or super capacitor, and a sensor device with wireless communication capabilities. The electrical interfaces between the components must be defined and fully integrated, and the sensor device needs to be programmed to gather sensor data and transmit the data over a wireless connection. In addition, power consumption will need to be measured and analyzed in combination with simulations and theory to settle boundary conditions for possible use cases and pave the way for future research.

You will

  • Measure the power characteristics of the energy harvester
  • Configure a battery or super capacitor charger
  • Develop a power supply interface for the sensor device
  • Integrate the energy harvester, charger, and sensor device
  • Program the sensor device to gather and transmit data to a web server over Bluetooth, NB-IoT, or LTE-M
  • Visualize the sensor data on the server side
  • Resolve and present the feasibility for an energy neutral device based on empirical studies and theoretical models

Qualification

We are hiring two master thesis students who study Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Wireless Communications, Information and Communication Technology, or similar. On an equal opportunity basis, we are interested in students who have good experience and understanding of analog and digital electronics, preferably with battery or super capacitor knowledge, analog circuit simulation, and PCB design. We are also looking for students with good experience of programming embedded real time systems, especially in C language with ARM processors and Zephyr real time operating system. Understanding of power optimization techniques, client-server web services, and wireless communication protocols is a strong bonus. Proficiency in English, written and oral, is required.
