Our Exciting Opportunity

Ericsson is developing a digital financial platform that is already improving the lives of millions of daily users in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Understanding the market needs and to be able to communicate clear and understandable requirements within the organizations is crucial for having a successful product and a good/secure customer experience in the end. Requirements for new customizations and product changes comes from multiple different stakeholders that all have different backgrounds, agendas and technical skills. This leads to that the incoming requirements are of various quality. The requirements are often poorly described and sometimes lacks crucial information in order to even start a proper analysis of the new requirement.

The problem we would like to investigate, as part of this thesis, is how we could make use of the latest research in the field of Natural Language Processing (and/or "restricted languages"). Future investigations (not pursued in this thesis but mentioned to motivate the aim) will focus on the semi-automated derivation of test cases and feature documentation (feature description, system overview etc.) from use-cases and formal requirements (short description of the wanted system behavior or business rule that should be applied).

You will

This master thesis can be divided into:
  • Part One: Literature study where existing research in the area is examined. The goal is to find a suitable technology/methodology for improving incoming requirements (described as "user stories") and derive formal requirements.
  • Part Two: An empirical investigation, using the findings from Part One. The questions that are likely (but not exclusively) of interest to investigate are the following:
    • What are the practical challenges in defining high quality user stories?
    • Which technology/methodology can address the identified challenges?
    • How can high quality user stories be re-used for the creation of new user stories (to reduce effort)?
    • How can formal requirements be derived from user stories?
  • Part Three: Build a "Proof of Concept" application, based on the findings from Part Two. The application shall be designed such that it can be used by the different requirement stakeholders and simplify/enhance/align the creation of user stories. In addition, the application shall support the derivation of formal requirements from user stories.

The thesis will be concluded with a result presentation for the Ericsson Mobile Financial Services team.

This project aims at students in SW Engineering. Some experience within Natural Language Processing is preferred. An interest in financial services, development processes and requirement handling is beneficial.
