Our Exciting Opportunity

Ericsson Product Development Unit (PDU) Cloud Radio Access Network (RAN) within Business Unit Networks (BNEW) develops new generation of the RAN infrastructure addressing mobile communication use cases and implementing it adopting cloud native design principles.

The basic idea of a RAN is to provide wireless connectivity and the functionality for providing such service is at increasing pace moving towards being deployed in a cloud. Behind the scenes there is still a lot of networking over wired connections between nodes in datacenters forming such clouds. In IP based networks there are often several different paths between nodes.

There are existing protocols which calculate best path based on different criteria. One example is OSPF which calculates the shortest path between two nodes (least number of router hops). The least number of hops might however not be the best choice in all situations. It could be that one of the links has poor bandwidth or long delay, or some other problem. With an AI based algorithm it could be possible to calculate the best path based on other metrics. Some work in this area have been done, still there is a need to look deeper into it in the context of Cloud RAN.

Thesis description

We are welcoming students about to finalize their M.Sc. degree and are on quest for an exciting technical thesis in a technology area of high strategic importance. Your thesis will be connected to our development teams' overall mission to develop and systemize cloud-native software and solutions based on Kubernetes and related software.

A network simulator called GNS3 exist with which one can perform functional simulations. This tool can also be used to model the networking (connectivity) inside a data center. In your thesis you would build a model of RAN including data centers (running Kubernetes).

Once a functional model is constructed, you continue by implementing it either in a virtualized environment or with real HW equipment (Routers/Switches/X86_Server) and thereafter measure performance in Kubernetes clusters. A possible extension includes a training environment for AI algorithm calculating best path networking wise.

You will

  • Work as a team of two students and have the freedom to form your own project in an area of high strategic importance
  • Build up background knowledge by studying papers related to evaluation of best path algorithms in cloud and datacenters and gain insights to their respective pros and cons
  • Investigate feasibility of possible AI-based algorithms complementing above
  • Implement selected methodology in GNS3 network simulator and perform functional simulations
  • Evaluate and draw conclusions from the work
  • Do proof of concept demo, write thesis report and present your work to a wider audience


To be successful in the role you must have

  • Maximum one semester left of your Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, industrial economics or similar.
  • A significant number of courses completed (associated with the degree on masters level)
  • Deep analytical skills and the ability to acquire new knowledge and apply it in the job.
  • Good presentation skills in written and spoken English.
  • Experience of programming and scripting languages (e.g. Python, C/C++, Java, Bash shell, Yaml)
  • Capability to work in Linux environment
  • Knowledge in internet data formats & protocols (e.g. XML, HTTP, REST) and systems
  • Knowledge in virtualization technology & cloud computing (in particular Kubernetes)
  • Basic data- and telecom system knowledge, including relevant protocol suites (TCP/IP)
  • Exposure to Kubernetes and related common technologies for cloud native software development is an added advantage.
