Our Exciting Opportunity

Autonomous vehicles is an area which is evolving rapidly, these vehicles may be everything from small sized drones to full sized cars or trucks. In some cases, these vehicles are fully autonomous, in other cases they involve some human interaction.

5G provide them with fast and low latency data transmission and the possibility of processing in edge data centers. This gives an opportunity to offload processing from the vehicle to the edge. Offloading can be desirable for several reasons. For instance, autonomous lightweight drones have limited processing power and can therefore benefit form edge cloud support.

Ericsson has, in cooperation with LTU and SICS-ICE RISE datacenter, an innovative 5G connected edge compute setup in Luleå, where a proof-of-concept self-driving toy-car has been tested.

In a future, with edge compute capabilities everywhere, there must be data driven, algorithm that predicts and decides which compute tasks that should be run on which node. Some tasks must be run on the local device (the car, in this case) and others will, due to high computational complexity etc., yield a lower total latency if they are run in the edge node.

Using the self-driving car platform as a starting point, the main task of this thesis is study, create and test algorithms for edge/local compute positioning optimization on a live network. You will be responsible for creating mechanisms to analyze capabilities such as compute capacity, bandwidth and latency in various nodes and based on this define algorithms to optimize placement decisions and the overall service experience. Alternatively, if you have an idea of your own that relates to edge computing that you see can be tested in this platform, we are also open to discuss this.


  • MSc student, preferably in engineering physics, electrical engineering, computer science or similar
  • Knowledge of Python/Tensorflow/Torch and Docker/Kubernetes/Rancher
  • Knowledge of AI-algorithms (object detection, data handling/augmentation, feature extraction techniques)
  • Courses in AI, self-learning algorithms as well as experience of communication systems and internet protocols are considered valuable merits.
