Our Exciting Opportunity

Wireless communication aims toward providing ubiquitous connectivity which can meet a range of use cases and scenarios. The industry 4.0 vision describes a use case for smart connected factories. This use case requires stationary machines, sensors and devices to be connected but also moving objects such as drones, mobile robots and humans. This allows flexible manufacturing setups not bound by cables and factories that are fully automated. Stringent requirements on the radio access technology used in these environments are necessary as both latency and reliability become key for the viability of the new use case.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has published a new Wi-Fi version 6 containing features allowing Wi-Fi access points to schedule transmissions and simultaneously serve multiple users. Additionally, new unlicensed spectrum in the 6 GHz band has been made available totaling 1.2 GHz of spectrum. By employing accurate frequency planning in combination with these new features Wi-Fi networks can provide a more controlled environment with less unpredictability compared to previous generations of Wi-Fi in respect to both interference and channel access. The combination of these features and th e new spectrum is marketed as Wi-Fi 6E and the combined solution positions the Wi-Fi industry to tackle the challenging wireless factory scenario.

The scope of this thesis is a qualitative study on the performance of Wi-Fi 6E networks evaluating how well such a system can fulfill the requirements of the smart factory.

You will

  • Familiarize yourself with Industry 4.0 scenarios and requirements
  • Perform a survey of Wi-Fi 6 features and assess their relevance for Industry 4.0 use cases
  • Implement selected features in a radio network simulator
  • Perform system simulations and analyze the results
  • Propose innovative improvements to influence the next generation of Wi-Fi.


To be successful in the role you must have

  • One semester left of your Master studies within electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, machine learning or similar.
  • Wireless communication knowledge
  • Preferably hands on experience with Monte Carlo simulations
  • Programming skills in Java, Python, Matlab
  • Innovative and creative thinking
  • English written and spoken
