Our Exciting Opportunity

The thesis project will be carried out in the development organization for Operations Support Systems (OSS) within Business Unit Digital Services. Our responsibility in Karlskrona is the development of products within the Provisioning and Activation area, i.e. activation of Subscribers, Services and Resources. Currently, we have ~400 installations worldwide and our products serve over 2 billion users.

The goal of this thesis is to compare characteristics differences between applications on VMs (Virtual Machine), or in a container based form (Kubernetes). Main focus is the CPU usage, including indirect CPU usage, for instance related to increased networking in certain deployment contexts.

We also want to analyze the characteristic differences resulting from using different network plugins in Kubernetes.

In the end we want to make use of the results to decrease the CPU usage for our container based Ericsson Dynamic Activation product, which is a gateway into the core mobile network to manage end-user specific data.

You will

  • Learn about cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes and cloud native networking.
  • Identify and quantify characteristics differences between different types of deployments.
  • Analyze results and present findings.
  • Propose cost effective changes to the container based Ericsson Dynamic Activation application to improve on CPU utilization.


Qualifications

  • Final year Bachelor's or Master's student in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar.
  • A significant number of courses completed (associated with the degree).
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to acquire new knowledge and apply it in the job.
  • Good communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Exposure to Kubernetes and databases is an added advantage
