Our Exciting Opportunity

Background

In a mobile communications network, the one aim is to provide connectivity for different user equipment like for example cell phones. There have been several different technologies (GSM, WCDMA, LTE…) that all provided some level of service to the users. The most recent mobile technology is NR, also sometimes called 5G. One of the main differences in NR compared to for example LTE is that NR can use much higher frequency bands for communication between the cell phone and the base station. This also leads to that carrier aggregation, where two or more frequency carriers are used to achieve higher data rates becomes increasingly important. In traffic steering one important thing is to ensure that the cell phone always is connected to the best set of cells.

Thesis Description

The thesis shall investigate and compare different methods for re-selection of carrier aggregation cell set. It could for example be to compare different triggers for when a new cell set should be considered.

The following steps are envisioned as part of the thesis work:
  • Investigate and select some promising strategies for carrier aggregation cell set re-selection.
  • Implement the selected strategies in Matlab and evaluate using output from a multi-layer simulator.
  • Document the results in a report.

The thesis will be concluded with a result presentation for the Traffic Sections within Ericsson.
