Our Exciting Opportunity

Background and Thesis Objectives

Previous studies indicate that the uplink performance of cellular networks that serve unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) critically depends on the quality of channel estimation and the receiver algorithms at the cellular base stations. Most previous works assume that the channel between the UAVs and the respective serving BS is block fading and develop channel estimation and receiver design algorithms based on that assumption.

This thesis project studies channel estimation and receiver algorithms that capitalize on the fact that more accurate channel models for UAVs take into account the time evolution of the channels, which depends on the correlation structure between subsequent channel realizations. Since the time-varying wireless channels between UAVs and terrestrial cellular base stations may contain line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS (NLoS) components, the thesis project will investigate the performance of channel estimation and receiver algorithms in both Rayleigh and Rician fading environments.

The desired outcome of the thesis project is a proposal on viable channel estimation and receiver algorithms along with their performance analysis by means of analytical models and system simulations. Ultimately, the thesis project is expected to contribute to cellular network designs when cellular networks serve a mixture of airborne (UAV) users and terrestrial mobile broadband users on the ground.

Research Questions and Hypothesis

This thesis project seeks answers to the following research questions:
  • What is the performance of channel estimation algorithms in the presence of autoregressive LoS (Rician) and NLoS (Rayleigh) channels between terrestrial and non-terrestrial users and their respective serving base stations? What is the performance of MU-MIMO receivers for UAVs in the presence of channel estimation errors?
  • Intuitively, we expect (hypothesis) that when the channels are autoregressive, that is they contain a strong memory at subsequent channel estimation instances, both channel estimation and MIMO receiver structures can reach higher performance in terms of estimation mean squared error (MSE) and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR).

Hypothesis: Channel estimation and MIMO receiver algorithms that are "AR aware" achieve substantially higher performance in terms of MSE and SINR than traditional channel estimators and receivers for cellular UAV communications.

Examination Method

The thesis project must
  • describe the proposed channel estimation and receiver algorithms for MIMO cellular systems serving UAVs,
  • implement the proposed algorithm in a MATLAB and/or Python environment and
  • extensively evaluate and compare its performance with benchmark algorithms.

  • The evaluation will be based on the novelty and performance of the proposed algorithm and the clarity of the thesis report.

The thesis report must contain persuasive arguments and numerical results that clearly show that the proposed algorithm performs close or outperform benchmarking algorithms without unreasonable complexity increase of existing schemes.
