Ericsson Research is looking for Master Thesis candidates with enthusiasm and skill, to be part of our current Radio research and specifically in our research on trustworthy wireless communications.


The objective of the thesis project is to contribute to the development of future AI empowered wireless systems that are trustworthy by design.

Reliable and efficient operation of radio communication relies on accurate and reliable channel state information. However, intentional pilot-contamination has been identified as a security threat to wireless communication systems.

The goal of this project is to develop new resilient machine learning based pilot contamination detection and intrusion detection schemes. The developed schemes should be able to withstand intelligent attackers and adversarial learning techniques and come with performance guarantees.

We consider a system model that describes a pilot-based CSI acquisition process that is guarded by a pilot-contamination detector and assume the objective of the attacker is to manipulate the CSI estimate in a desired way without being detected. In order to evaluate the worst-case performance, we apply an optimization-based approach under the assumption that the attacker has full knowledge of the system (i.e., a white-box attack) and composes its attack vector of two components, a pilot contamination signal and a perturbation signal to attack the detector. This restriction is necessary since solving the underlying optimization problem is only feasible for toy examples. However, it allows us to apply the existing theory of adversarial learning to this problem, and results will provide us with achievability bounds on the worst-case performance.

As a student, you will be involved in the developing of such algorithms as well as implementing and testing them by means of computer simulations. The assignment involves the understanding of the theoretical foundations, developing simulation environments and evaluating the results.


Deliverables expected at the end of the thesis project include clearly documented working code, a final thesis report, and a live presentation of the final implementation and outcome to an Ericsson audience. Note that these are in addition to your university thesis requirements.


As a person, you want to perform at your best and you want to participate in deep technical discussions with other team members. You believe that technical innovation involves the theoretical foundation and applying them in developing realistic models.

We are looking for a self-motivated and creative student with the following qualifications:
  • Master student in the area of Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar
  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Hands-on programming experience, preferably in Python, R, C/C++, MATLAB
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good knowledge of linear algebra, optimization theory, signal processing and machine learning is a merit
