Our team

At 5G Baseband System Management our main task is to specify the wanted behaviour of advanced radio network functions for the 5G NR RAN. Additionally, these solutions have to be complainant to 3GPP standardisation by developing and utilising simulators which optimise signal processing algorithms, develop baseband architectures, collect and analyse data from customer networks and perform troubleshooting.

We work with technical innovation where emphasis is put on RF design, product performance, hardware architecture where complexity, power efficiency, signal processing, and radio algorithms is at the heart of what we do.

We work with signal processing, Radio Resource Management, Physical layer algorithms, Multi-Antenna radio communication, development of 5G-software simulations, supporting the deployment of our new innovative 5G products in live networks, and many more activities are what we carry out!

Our Exciting Opportunity

In 5G networks, each cell is associated with a physical cell identity (PCI) that is used to distinguish different cells. As the 5G networks grow physical cell identity (PCI) planning becomes more crucial since the number of unique PCIs is limited (limited number of reference signals and PCI values). Many factors are involved such as multiple frequency bands, antenna heights, geography, different radio configurations, etc. Additionally, as more cells are going to be added, the PCI planning will be changing constantly. Nevertheless, it is possible to perform measurements and analysis on those parameters. Areas of interests include beam management, cell coverage, cell and sector clusters and patterns and so on.

Thesis Description

This research effort will focus on developing a tool to automate the generation of the PCI planning and also to constantly measure and heal the planning based on diverse parameters. We are looking for two students to join this project. The work will be done at Ericsson in Lund, Sweden.

You will

Study, evaluate performance and analyse the optimal PCI planning using simulation to find out how to:
  • Generate an algorithm which be able to automatically allocate unique PCI to each cell based on different initial conditions/configurations.
  • This algorithm must be able to automate its PCI planning when the network suffers any impact on configuration, conditions or abnormal behaviour.
  • The algorithm must measure regularly its performance and improve the PCI planning based on performance indicators.


  • Final year Master's student with a background in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or similar.
  • Experience/completed courses in wireless communication, RF, and/or digital signal processing.
  • Experience with/completed courses in AI/ML algorithms within supervised and unsupervised learning.
  • Experience in coding system Python, TensorFlow or any other coding tool.
  • Experience in using simulation tools, preliminary MATLAB.
