Our team

At 5G Baseband System Management our main task is to specify the wanted behaviour of advanced radio network functions for the 5G NR RAN. Additionally, these solutions have to be complainant to 3GPP standardisation by developing and utilising simulators which optimise signal processing algorithms, develop baseband architectures, collect and analyse data from customer networks and perform troubleshooting.

We work with technical innovation where emphasis is put on RF design, product performance, hardware architecture where complexity, power efficiency, signal processing, and radio algorithms is at the heart of what we do!

We work with signal processing, Radio Resource Management, Physical layer algorithms, Multi-Antenna radio communication, development of 5G-software simulations, supporting the deployment of our new innovative 5G products in live networks, and many more activities are what we carry out!

Our Exciting Opportunity

At the Ericsson site by the water tower in Lund, we have access to an outdoor 5G site running at 28 GHz (mmW). While performing live tests and measurements in the open environment we learn a lot of how the cellular system work and behave in a realistic deployment. Different environmental factors will impact the radio link between the phones and the base stations in various ways. Combining performance data from a 5G phone's radio system with in-depth system logs from the radio base station can give us unique insights of how the end-to-end system performs.

Thesis Description

This master thesis will install a 5G phone within the coverage area of our outdoor 5G high-band cell and continuously collect performance data from it together with local metrological data such as relative humidity in the air and precipitation. The radio performance measurements can e.g. be throughput in up- and down-link, latency and transmission error rates. These measurements can be used together in a ML based model to help us understand how different factors impact the radio performance. We are looking for two students to join this project. The work will be done at Ericsson in Lund, Sweden.

You will

  • Study theoretically how e.g. the air relative humidity and precipitation affects a microwave radio link.
  • Implement a data collection system based on 5G logs from a connected phone and the serving base station.
  • Evaluate the measurements and if possible build a ML based model that can predict radio performance based on meteorological input.


Qualifications

  • Final year Master's student with a background in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or similar, studying at LTH in Lund.
  • Interest/experience/completed courses in e.g. wireless communication, RF and/or internet protocols
  • Experience with/completed courses in AI/ML algorithms.
