Our Exciting Opportunity

Background

Telecom and Datacom backbone networks are built using optical fibre as it exhibits the lowest transmission loss of all the possible physical media. This same fibre is now being tested for feasibility of carrying quantum bits of information. In a recent article by Takemoto et al. the authors demonstrate secure quantum key distribution over 100 km by using single photon sources. They anticipate feasibility up to 120 km and secure key rates of 0.307 bps. In another study Xiang et al demonstrate O-band quantum dot generated entangled photon transmission over deployed fibre. These results demonstrate that single photon sources can be used in future telecom quantum key distribution (QKD) networks. To be able to extend the reach of QKD, the need for quantum error-correction is anticipated, but although this can be done in principle it is associated with some hard engineering challenges.

A related, but much simpler problem is to perform error correction on single photons, but in a fixed basis, i.e., the |H> / |V> basis. We plan to demonstrate that a recently patented family of error-correction codes gives a better information rate in the low energy regime, than current state-of-the-art error correction. The reason our patented code can perform better is that it has been tailored specifically to a photon loss channel.

Work description

We offer a master thesis project on the implementation and realization of a quantum communication network. The network is based on deployed optical fibers linking the KTH campus with Ericsson research lab in Kista and can potentially be operated both with single and entangled photon sources based on quantum dots.

The work is to be carried out between Ericsson Research and the Quantum Nano Photonics group at KTH.

Project goals

Your task will be to implement error correction schemes for photons and to study quantum communication protocols.

Qualifications

  • Last year of Master degree studies in the area of mathematics, physics or related fields.
  • Candidate should be proficient in fibre optics, basic quantum optics and preferably also information theory/error correction codes.
  • Languages: the candidate must be proficient in the use of spoken and written English.
