Our Exciting Opportunity

Ericsson is developing a digital financial platform that is already improving the lives of millions of daily users in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. In large and modern software deployments like Ericsson wallet platform, we strive for operational excellence and wish to solve some challenges and limitations in this area, for example:
  • It is often painful to troubleshoot sudden performance degradations when there are incidents or capacity issues.
  • Root cause analysis task (referred as RCA) is a time consuming, manual, offline, post processing job.
  • A "Good quality" RCA is often depending on the team availability and of course the individual engineer competence level.
  • Nearly impossible to visually analyze 1000's of reports/logs from different sources and take comprehensive decisions/actions accordingly using a classic analytics tool.

The problem we wish to investigate as part of the thesis is how to achieve efficient system operations by automating such major tasks like "RCA" and obviously increase system availability and reduce operations cost (OPEX).

One suggestion is to use Machine Learning "data driven" techniques that can automatically model the behavior of our operations, trends, periodicity, and more - in real time to identify issues faster, streamline RCAs, prevent issues before it happens and reduce false alarms.

This master thesis end goal is to investigate multiple practical solutions for automated root cause analysis, and conceptually implement the most favorable solution. Here are some Key focus areas:
  • How can we narrow down a comprehensive view of relationships between anomalies that allows rapid troubleshooting focus, by bringing the "troubleshooter" directly to the most probable root causes for an incident/failure?
  • Explore what machine learning techniques or models can be used.
  • What data, logs or metrics are useful to be collected and analyzed for this matter?
  • Will a "hybrid" approach of multiple Machine Learning models combined with a set of "Rules and thresholds" be capable to identify the root cause of complex incidents in minutes instead of hours or days?
  • Is it possible to automatically generate a comprehensive RCA report, supported with facts and evidence(s) from multiple data sources?
  • Discuss implementation options
  • Implement a proof of concept

The thesis will be concluded with a result presentation for our Ericsson team.

To be successful in the role you must have

This project aims towards 1-2 students in SW Engineering. Some experience within AI/ML, applied data science area is preferred. An interest in mobile financial services is beneficial. Ability to start your thesis project in January 2022.
